FREE: scheduling and accountability tools.COSTS EXTRA: test kits and laboratory or professional testing, bought separately.

App Dependency Depends on the app. This page describes how the P in the Cup app is intended to work. The app is not live yet, and details may change before launch.

Personal / Solo Planned

Your commitment. Your schedule. Your choice.

Some people find that a little outside structure helps them keep a promise to themselves. Personal mode is being designed for one adult on their own device: a fair random schedule you set up, optional goals and encouragement, and no accountability partner required.

The random scheduling and accountability service is free. Test kits and any laboratory testing are purchased separately.

A personal "Is today the day?" screen showing a sample day that is not a testing day, check-in count, a personal goal and an optional badges switch.

The app is not open yet

Everything on this page describes the planned design of the P in the Cup app, which has not launched. The picture above is a prototype. Details may change before launch, and we will only describe a feature as available once it really works.

Why use it on your own

Self-accountability you choose

You do not need a partner, a group or anyone's permission. You decide how often, what to track and whether anyone else ever sees it.

A schedule you cannot quietly move

You choose how often a test day might come up. The days themselves are chosen at random in advance, so you cannot test only on days you feel confident. How fair scheduling works.

Short, achievable goals

Start with something small, like a 7-day check-in habit, and build from there. Goals are about participation, not perfection.

Encouragement, if you want it

Optional achievements and digital rewards mark showing up and checking in. They are never tied to a test result or to a claim of abstinence. Switch them off any time. Goals & Rewards.

Private by design

Your records are planned to live in an encrypted vault on your own device. You can use a nickname, or no name at all.

Schedule only, if you prefer

You can use the schedule without recording any test outcomes. An optional private journal is planned for people who like to write things down.

Stop any time

This is voluntary. You can pause, reset a goal, or wipe your vault whenever you choose.

Step by step Planned

How it works for you

  1. Set your own rules

Choose a frequency, such as a few test days a month, the time zone your day starts in, and whether you want goals and encouragement switched on.

  2. Your device chooses the days in advance

Test days for each period are chosen at random on your own device before the period starts, and sealed with a verifiable commitment. Opening today's reveal again cannot change the answer, and there is no reroll.

  3. Check "Is today the day?"

Each day you see a simple status. On a scheduled day, you use a test you bought separately, as you planned. Recording the outcome is up to you.

  4. Notice your own follow-through

Check-ins, goals and optional milestones show your consistency over time. A missed day is information, not a verdict on you.

What is free, and what is not

The random scheduling and accountability service is free. Test kits and any laboratory testing are purchased separately. Buying a kit is never required to use the schedule. For neutral buying education, see the Test Kit Guide.

Privacy model Planned

Your records stay on your device

Personal mode is being designed so that P in the Cup does not need to know who you are.

  • Local encrypted vault. Your schedule, check-ins, goals and any results you choose to record are planned to be kept in an encrypted vault on your device, not on P in the Cup's servers.
  • No operator-run account required. Personal mode is designed to work without an email account held by us. A nickname is optional.
  • Your keys, your responsibility. You will be able to export and back up your vault. If you lose your device and your recovery key, your records may be lost permanently, because nobody else holds a copy.
  • Nothing shared unless you choose. If you later invite a trusted person, you decide exactly what they can see, and you can withdraw it.

The honest limits

Local-first does not mean zero risk. Downloading the app and its updates still creates ordinary network traffic, browser storage is not the same as dedicated secure hardware, and anyone with access to your unlocked device may see what is on it. Read Privacy Explained for the full picture.

An honest frame

What a schedule can and cannot do

A random schedule can make a commitment concrete. It removes the temptation to test only on good days, and it gives you a visible record of your own follow-through.

It cannot promise recovery, and a home screen is a preliminary result that only covers what that test measures. Our guide on how to choose a test kit explains the limits. P in the Cup is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any recovery fellowship or treatment provider. It is not treatment, and it does not replace it.

Example persona

"Sam", using the schedule on their own

Sam wants to keep a personal commitment and likes having something outside their own head decide the days. Sam picks about one test day a week, leaves results unrecorded, and sets a 30-day check-in goal with badges switched on. Nobody else is involved, and there is no account for anyone else to see.

Questions

Personal mode FAQ

Do I need an email address to use personal mode?

The planned design does not require an email account held by P in the Cup. Your records live in a vault on your device. The trade-off is that if you lose both your device and your recovery key, we cannot restore your records for you.

Can I change today's answer by opening the app again?

No. The days for each period are chosen in advance and sealed with a commitment that can be checked later. Opening the reveal again only shows the answer that was already set.

Are rewards given for negative tests?

No. Optional achievements and digital rewards are for participation, such as checking in and keeping your own goals. They are never tied to a test result or a claim of abstinence, and you can switch them off.

Is the testing free?

No. The random scheduling and accountability service is free. Test kits and any laboratory testing are purchased separately. P in the Cup does not sell or administer tests.

Can I add a partner or a coach later?

That is the plan. You will be able to invite a trusted adult into a limited view and choose exactly what they see. See For Families and For Coaches & Sponsors.
